South African Kidnap Victim Saved by His Friends on Twitter

South African Kidnap Victim Saved by His Friends on Twitter

A South African victim of robbery and kidnapping was last night rescued after his girlfriend tweeted for help. The man from Johannesburg was hijacked and put in the boot of hiss car while the robbers looked for where to dump him and get away with the car.
The robbers forgot to take away his phone which he used to send his girlfriend, Lynn Peters, an SMS. Lynn then tweeted
7 of her friends retweeted the tweet including her friend Tanisha Reddy who alerted famous South African tweep, @Pigspotter, to retweet the message to his more than 100,000 followers composed also of a good number of private security companies.

Quick-thinking carjack victim uses text messages and Twitter to get rescued

Quick-thinking carjack victim uses text messages and Twitter to get rescued

oday a South African man is thanking his girlfriend’s Twitter followers for saving his life. The victim of a carjacking and robbery, the unnamed man was held-up at gun point then forced into the trunk of his Volkswagen Golf while his assailants went for a 150 mile ride. Lucky for him the carjackers didn’t happen to find his cellphone during their rushed search for valuables, an oversight that cost them dearly and won the man his freedom back.
Twitter to the rescue
Now, while many US residents would have immediately dialed 911 if locked in their trunks at the hands of carjackers, the victim decided to text message his girlfriend for help. While the exact reason for this isn’t known, it could have something to do with the fact that many of the police in South Africa aren’t always top-notch — they’ve been known to set up false roadblocks seeking bribes to let people through. Whatever the reason, his choice was highly effective because the immediate response of Lynn Peters (the girlfriend in question) was to go directly to Twitter to try and leverage social media to locate the stolen vehicle. Going by the Twitter handle “@onebadvillyn,” Peters sent out the message pictured above that included the license plate number of her boyfriend’s Golf. What happened next was a lesson in going viral.
Not surprisingly, all of Peters’ friends and followers on Twitter picked up the message and then retweeted it out to spread the word about the ongoing crisis. One of Peters’ followers was Tanisha Reddy, a self-proclaimed socialite from Johannesburg. Interestingly (and luckily) enough, one of her 125 followers happens to be a gentleman who goes by the handle “@PigSpotter,” a popular Twitter user that uses social media to alert South African citizens to the aforementioned illegal roadblock put up by corrupt officers. Upon seeing Reddy’s retweet, PigSpotter put the word out to his 100,000 followers, increasing the search effort exponentially.
Because of his law-enforcement related activities, PigSpotter is followed by several private security firms that jumped at the chance to try to help the carjacking victim. Several different companies offered services ranging from tracking the man’s cellphone signal to seeing if there was some sort of electronic tracking on the vehicle. But it wasn’t until K9 Security spotted the vehicle in Ventersberg, some 150 miles from the original carjacking site , that the day was saved. After reporting the sighting to authorities, K9 Security helped to stop the car at a police roadblock, where they both jumped out of the car and fled on foot. The victim, unharmed, emerged from the trunk sweaty but in piece thankful for his rescue.
While many people would question his choice of reaching out for help, really it makes a lot of sense since social media allows messages to be distributed at lightning speeds. It’s certainly faster than a phone call and then trying to explain things to another person. Kudos to the victim, his girlfriend, and the many who responded to get him home safe!

500px aims to kill Flickr with new $20 Plus plan

500px aims to kill Flickr with new $20 Plus plan Flickr has been the de facto place where professional photographers show off their work for several years now, but Yahoo has failed to really capitalize on the Flickr brand as the company continues to falter. Now, it might be the beginning of the end for the once proud site. Rival photo haven 500px has introduced a new cheaper membership plan that undercuts Flickr and brings some unique features to the table.
Flickr’s Pro plan costs $25 per-month, which is a perfectly good value. 500px used to offer just a pricey $50 tier, but the new $20 Plus membership seems aimed directly at Flickr. A 500px Plus account will provide you with unlimited storage and access to your files, an unlimited number of collections, market functionality, and viewing statistics. This matches almost 1:1 with what Flickr is offering.
The statistics provided by 500px are somewhat more advanced than those you’d get with Flickr. The market functionality included with 500px Plus is a very robust service that helps users buy prints of their favorite pics, and Flickr can’t really match this even at the Pro level. These features have already coaxed some professionals into leaving Flickr, and the new lower price can only accelerate that.
500px also rolled out a Mac file upload tool to make getting content into the service that much easier for the roughly 25% of 500px users that have a Mac. The app sits at the top of the screen, ready to upload any pics you want at a moment’s notice. The web uploader, while reasonably good, is more tedious than this method. No word on a Windows version of the tool.
500px is currently seeing 30,000 photo uploads per day to the service, and a cheaper plan will likely increase the rate at which 500px leaches users from more established services.

Geek deals: $498 off quad-core Dell desktop and 24-inch monitor
Wednesday, April 11, 2012 3:03 AM

Your dollar will take you further with a desktop than a laptop (unpopular fact, but it’s almost always true). Nonetheless, it is still not enough to persuade many people to throw down their cash and get a large, heavy, dust-collecting tower. But what if a free 24-inch LED monitor happened to be include for a [...]
Kubuntu secures new funding beyond 12.04
Wednesday, April 11, 2012 2:40 AM

In February it was announced by developer Jonathan Riddell that Canonical was set to end its funding of Kubuntu with version 12.04 shipping. The reason was a lack of business success for the distribution coupled with Canonical’s focus on Unity. Even so, Canonical has funded the project for seven years, with Riddell’s last day working [...]
The internet responds to Google’s Project Glass
Wednesday, April 11, 2012 1:42 AM

We’ve been hearing rumors about these Google Glasses for a some time now, but actually seeing Project Glass really impressed a lot of people. The glasses looks far less intrusive than had been previously imagined, and, if Google’s video is any indication of the future, when this new tech does reach consumers it could be [...]
RIM to start encrypting app downloads to combat piracy
Wednesday, April 11, 2012 12:44 AM

RIM’s Alec Saunders caused a fair amount of controversy with recent postings to his Twitter account. Apart from calling the Google Play market a “cesspool” and wagging his finger at rampant app piracy, he also told the world that RIM was going to drop app sideloading for end users. Realistically, the change probably wouldn’t have [...]

Tuesday, April 10, 2012 11:55 PM

It has been 8 long years since the release of Max Payne 2, and even longer since the first Max Payne video game came on the scene. Most of us probably have a vague memory at best of running through the streets of New York and slow bullet-time sequences. Or maybe you’re more like me, [...]
UAV helicopters to help curb piracy on the high seas
Tuesday, April 10, 2012 11:09 PM

While Hollywood churns our movies depicting pirates as likeable characters, the real-life scallywags are continuing to make serious trouble on the shipping lanes near the Middle East. With the condition worsening in impoverished countries like Somalia, the rate of piracy occurrence has skyrocketed. Hoping to curtail these bold buccaneers, the US Navy is equipping several “Fire-Scout” UAV helicopters with [...]

Leaked Lost Planet 3 trailer harks back to first game
Tuesday, April 10, 2012 9:00 PM

There was quite a contrast between the first two games in the Lost Planet series developed by Capcom. The original Lost Planet and subsequent Extreme Conditions enhanced version were set in a snow and ice environment filled with mechs, bugs, and giant bosses. It was a great single-player experience. The second game was instead optimized [...]

The side effect? Heat. The latest device to suffer from a noticeable increase in heat is the new iPad, but it is far [...]

Nikon’s new pro-level D4 is out in the wild and I was able to get my hands on one for a short shooting session. The D4 was paired with the company’s 24-70mm f/2.8, making for a very nice rig, especially when combined with a beautiful spring day here in NYC. The two components came together [...]

The wait for the Raspberry Pi to be shipped has been frustrating, but then this is the first product launch the Raspberry Pi Foundation has undertaken, and their ranks are full of engineers, not a sales team. Even so, it’s easy to focus on the problems rather than the benefits of the Raspberry Pi hardware. [...]
